sub⎹div 05 recap: Gobe’s farewell was amazing!

Jeeeah. sub⎹div 05 was an absolute throw down people. So much love up in Lucky Bar last Friday, thank you all SO MUCH! It was great to see all the heads out to bid Ben Gobe farewell, huge hearts & huge basslines all night. Check all the pics below, they give a great sense of how much energy was in the room (photos by Ben Fox).

I thoroughly enjoyed opening the festivities – sub⎹div 05 was actually my first as a performer – so far I’ve enjoyed being the chaperone – but it was fun as hell to road test the set that I’ll have tweaked ready in time to open for Datsik on May 26 @ Element – I believe you won’t want to miss it ;) Cats that got rotation; Slugabed, Joy Orbison, Om Unit, Kuedo & Dilla Dilla Dilla.

EAMES upped the ante quickly with his sick set for sub⎹div 05. In the UK, where tings are evolving a wee bit quicker than here in North America, the reintegration of house music back into bass culture has ignited the creative fires; Oneman, Ben UFO, Roska, Martyn – all these heavy hitters are now blending house & techno stylings with sub-spatial movements & the effects are dope. Believe me when I say, there is nobody repping cutting edge UK stylez like Eames right now. The most relentless digger I know, Eames has developed a fantastic soup that manages to incorporate the purist clip of Tensnake & Efdemin with the hefty subs of Kode9, SBTRKT & Roska. DL his set & peep the tracklist…

And then we come to THE BIG REDS. What can be said about their send off set? With MC Natureboy in the house (UPS HORATIO!), shit was sure to pop off & crikey, the gingers delivered. Their set was nothing short of chest-caving – so many huuuuge tunes dropped, mixed seamlessly, executed perfectly. It was a solid reminder of what these cats have done over the last 3 years in the capital city – and how much skill is present when these 3 step to the decks together. Digi-dub, hefty wobblers, 2-step, cavernous drops, minimal sub-slaying monsters & drum-&-fucking-bass… The Big Reds are so much more than just “dubstep DJs”; they rep the entire spectrum of low-end vibrations & that’s what made Friday’s amazing set such a sick affair. Sure enough, Gobe will be missed, but Frame & Rhythmicon will be repping hard together. And I’m sure we’ll sneak some surprise Big Reds reunion gigs later on this year… fingers crossed. ;)

Love,

Longshanks
