Bass Coast recap from Monolithium
Yoooo… this be Longshanks aka Monolithium aka nice guy pudgee cheeks.
The sub⎹div squad went to Bass Coast all armed & ready for some mega-coverage but somehow we seeeeriously got caught up in the come down. So much to the point that we basically missed our boat in giving our post-game report.
Nevertheless, I just wanted to take this opportunity to personally extend a massive THANK YOU to The Librarian & her amazing team of Bass Coast gyals. Anyone who made the trek to Squamish last month for the “gathering by the glacial river” knows just how amazing the entire experience was. The whole weekend was packed with amazing music, art & activities. Yes, Saturday was a bit messy with the rain, but hey, it’s BC & it’s the wild – it was invigorating to see so many barely even flinch in the face of all that mud & water. Just wanted to holler a bit below, since the weekend & event are so worthy…

My weekend started of unbelievably well – I got shit popping on the Slay Bay stage Friday night, ahead of, hmm let’s see: Calamalka, Prison Garde, Salva & Self Evident. Uuhhhh, yikes. Some of my favourite performers/producers PERIOD. This was such an honour & wow, the whole team totally nailed it.
Calamalka‘s sound is so fucking dialed in at this point, I think we can all nod & agree that calling him BC’s Dilla is A-OK. My own live set has benefitted massively from watching this dude throw down, his sound is pristeen & crackin’ like a muhfucka. Sporting the insane mask pictured above, he pulled er’body through his 80-95 bpm garden of crunk & it was dope watching so many get so open to his sound. Love the dude.
The G Rob Squire brought a shiteload of new heat. Unreleased Prison Garde jams, unreleased Nouveau Palais jams, unreleased collabs with Eames. It just kept coming & folk kept moving. Despite a fucked up midi controller, dude pulled his usual beat circus, moving through all tempos & vibes, including some smooth-ass techno shit that I am EAGER AS FUCK TO GET A DUB BEFORE ANYONE ELSE
I am always floored by his sets.
Salva. O shit. Dude kicked it off with “Issey Miyake”, playing that amazing synth riff live. And from there, err’thang basically went apeshit. I was well into a healthy convo with several Budweisers by this point, but man, Salva just has so much heat. His Om Unit remix, “Icey”, “Keys Open Doors”… ugh, such an inspiration, I was so glad I got to meet the dude, cannot wait for the Victoria show October 6th with Salva & Eprom!
Self Evident‘s set was a fucking tour de force. After all the previous acts (esp. Salva), Slay Bay Stage basically bacame 808 Stage. B Ulis’ set had me shaking my head in disbelief soooo mnay times. All I remember is looking at Prison Garde every 2 minutes with a foul look on my face like WHAT THE FUUUUUUCK. Didn’t catch all of this though becozzzzzzzz…
EAMES COMPLETELY MURDERED THE MAINSTAGE AT 3am. Yes, I get a little over-zealous about my dude, but without sounding like a wank, he’s come so far. Now my interpretation could be off – we were WELL into the whiskey at this point & it was 3 am for chrissakes – but this was likely my defining moment of the weekend, wiling out in the booth, hyping the crowd (likely toooo much) & guzzling anything in sight while some of my fave jams moved a massive dancefloor; Maya Jane Coles’ “What They Say”, Zed Bias’ “Dark Butterfly”, Downtown Party Network’s “Days Like These”… After moombahton & breaks, Eames deep set was ON ONE. massive pat on the back the him.
The rest of festival was amazing. Gotta give a mad shout to BOGL – he was a fresh face to me but his Saturday evening set MURDA DEM. He played an E-40 tune that seriously blew shit to bits & he cut into the VonStroke edit of “Wut” smoother than any DJ I’ve heard yet. Plus DJG‘s short term stint as MCG was fucking priceless (sadly, I messed DJG’s set on Sunday). EPROM – fucking insane with the iPad, he had the crowd in the palm of his hand his entire set. Again, excited to rock with him in October.
Taal Mala. The boy CAME WITH IT. Starting off with Aphex & Squarepusher is an easy way to my heart, so Keenan, you got that mane. And Max Ulis, congrats on having THEE TUNE OF BASS COAST. “Eastsiders” did not leave my head, plus I heard like 3 other cats rinse that joint too. Massive heater…
EASTSIDERS ft. Self Evident by Max Ulis
Anywaaayyyyz, y’all get the picture. Again, I know this is belated, but Bass Coast truly was an amazing experience. Mad ups to all who I met & had a laugh with; CHADIO (tight 16 brah!), Dan Solo, Devin Surefire, April, Caledonia, Paul, Geologist, DJG… y’all know who you are.
And to Eames, Paul & Rob, thanks for the laffs.
Apologies to DJG, HxdB, Cure, LWSD & Jacques Greene for missing yer sets.
Excited to do it again next year.
Lurv,
MNLTHM
